'…the male-voice quartet bOYbershop of London interpreted the melodies of the past, and particularly those of the Sephardi tradition. The beautiful timbres of their voices, their ensemble and the solid professionalism of their perfect musicianship were placed at the service of this repertoire, which deserves to be better known. The alternation of fast melodies and more intimate ones, the perfect interchange between solo passages and ensemble ones, creates a music that brings us to the gates of the East while also continuing a long vocal tradition in the image of the Comedian Harmonists, the irreplaceable German group of the 1920s and 1930s.'
DNA Saverne-Sarre Union, November 2015
bOYbershop is a professional quartet whose members sing a wide variety of music, from early music to opera, cantorial music and close harmony. The group regularly performs for concerts, festivals and weddings. Favourite performances have included the Chichester Festival, the Sacrées Journées de Strasbourg, the annual Montefiore Heritage concerts in Ramsgate, and singing for the London Jewish Cultural Centre and the Lord Mayor of London. We perform a wide repertoire, mostly comprising our own arrangements of Jewish music from the Sephardi, Ashkenazi, Yemenite and Mizrahi traditions. In addition to our own arrangements, we have performed the music of great Jewish composers such as Sulzer and Lewandowski. We also perform close harmony and barbershop arrangements (many in our own arrangements), and our own comic songs. Most of our arrangements are researched and composed by the group's founder, Benjamin Wolf.
The quartet has recorded an album of Sephardi and Ashkenazi melodies, available via the 'Buy Music' tab (or directly from CD Baby). You can also download a recording of one of our earliest concerts, 'bOYbershop Live', recorded at the Spiro Ark centre.
The quartet's regular membership comprises Benjamin Wolf, Eliot Alderman, Matthew Pochin and Gabriel Gottlieb, all of whom work as professional musicians. Benjamin Wolf is Senior Lecturer in Music at Regent's University London, and Musical Director of ensembles including the Zemel Choir and the professional choir of Belsize Square Synagogue. Eliot Alderman is an Orthodox Chazzan and Director of the Rinah Ensemble. Matthew Pochin and Gabriel Gottlieb both perform as oratorio soloists, professional choristers and opera singers.
Some of our videos feature our much-missed (late) colleague Will Petter, who was a regular member for a number of years. We have also been joined on occasion by other singers, including our founder members Marc Finer and Benjamin Seifert, as well as Miles Ashdown, Benjamin Cahn, Richard Newman and Chris Fish.
